“Nerdiness was too deeply embedded into his genetic makeup.”

“Don’t dwell on the negative,” she’d say. “Always look on the positive side of things. It’s a lot brighter there, and easier to find your way.”

“And then, out of nowhere, I was slammed with a sudden euphoric feeling; an unexplainable heat shooting through every cell in my body. My pulse quickened, along with my breath. Tingles pricked my skin. A rush of adrenaline flooded my veins and my surroundings began to haze. I grasped onto the edge of the bed, taking in long, deep breaths.”

“His powerful smile seemed to pull my sinking heart from its unknown depths of sadness, and place it somewhere a little safer.”

“Like somehow, we were destined to find each other, and everything inside of us seemed to be confirming that fact.”

Goodreads Synopsis:

Seventeen is a life changing age for Emma Wise.

As her family’s sole survivor in a car crash, she is left with a broken arm and a few scrapes and bruises. But these are only outward marks; inside, her heart is broken and the pieces scattered.

Whisked away to Alaska, to an aunt she’s never met, Emma starts over. Secrets unveil themselves and now…she doesn’t even know who or what she is.

A centuries old prophecy places Emma in the heart of danger. Creatures of horrifying and evil proportions are after her, and it will take Emma, her aunt, and six, gorgeously captivating Guardians to keep her safe. But, if she can survive until her eighteenth birthday… things will change.

My review:

4/5 stars

I received this e-book from the author, Cameo Renae, back when I first began blogging.

This book is about Emma, a girl who just turned 17, whose life is thrown into turmoil after surviving a car crash that killed both parents and discover she has to move to a remote part of Alaska with her mom’s half-sister whom she’s never met. Upon moving to Alaska, Emma’s life continues to be thrown upside side as she begins to discover more   where she comes from and who she really is.

This book is written from the point of view of the 16 year old main character of Emma. The author does a phenomenal job at accurately depicting the voice of the sixteen year old and how she processes everything she she is going through and feeling. The book was definitely an easy read and fast paced.  I liked how there were moments the Guardians were “human”/showing their goofy side, but could help fight and protect Emma and those around her at the drop of a hat.

My one pet peeve about this book was how Emma was “head over heels” for the male counterpart upon meeting him. I get that this is a young adult book and is a common theme with this genre but it really irked me that she fell for someone so quickly.

I wanted to continue the next book right away, but I had to sit down and write this review :-). I highly recommend this book to those who do love young adult books, as well as paranormal romance books.

**added comment**: I loved the fact that Cameo Renae set the book in Alaska, which is where she currently lives.
