Hello Readers!!!

I wanted to take the time to share with you the AMAZING day I just had!

I had received an invitation by DKC PR to attend The Great American Read Kick-Off event hosted by Meredith Vieira representing by blog! I was in complete shock when I revived the invitation.

The Great American Read is an eight part mini-series focusing on the nations top 100 novels (taken from a national survey). The series features celebrities, authors and book lovers talking about their favorite book on the top 100 list and how the book has impacted their life.

The intro to the series premieres on PBS on May 22, with a two hour episode revealing what books have made it to the list. After the premiere, there will be five one-hour episodes that feature books centered around a common theme and a finale where that features the winning book.

Today’s Kick-off Event

This event took place at the GORGEOUS Morgan Library and Museum. And I have to say… WOW. Surprisingly, I have never ventured into libraries such as this. Just as I try to visit independent bookshops, I would definitely like to visit more libraries.

Host Meredith Vieira, Ming-Na Wen (actress), Diane Lane (actress), Chris Kluwe (former NFL player and writer), Gayle Osterberg (Director of Communications at Library of Congress, Colin B. Bailey (Director of Morgan Library and Museum), Armistead Maupin (author), Janie Hermann (Public Programming Librarian), and Oren J. Teicher (CEO of American Booksellers Association) previewed the list of 100 books

After the list was presented, we had the chance to view the trailer for the series, as well as viewing a part of the premiere episode. It was very exciting to see that some books I had previously read made the list.

After this, there was a panel and Q& A. An audience member asked Vieira what makes a great book. Vieira responded saying that it is the character that draws her into a book and the theme is what keeps her reading the book.

I completely agree with this. I have to connect with at least one character for me to be drawn in and the story/theme of the book is what keeps me reading a book.

It was very interesting to find out that over 20 books on the list were at banned at some point in time.

Towards the end of the Q&A, the panel said they hoped that reading can become a national conversation.

I love the fact that, even now, there are so many people that absolute love reading. I enjoy being able to share my love of reading (of course, another reason why I began blogging).

I really hope that everyone can tune into this series and vote (once a day) on their favorite book!!

I also had the chance to meet Diane Lane, Ming-na Wen and Chris Kluwe (former NFL player and writer)
