Review of The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1) by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds

“The darkest minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces.” pg. 456 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

“Maybe I had learned a lot, and maybe I had a better grip on my abilities, but staring at him, my fists clenched and shaking, I couldn’t justify it. What was the point of being holed up with someone who didn’t believe in me when I had people out there who did?” pg. 408 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

“Did you know… you make me so happy that sometimes I actually forget to breathe? I’ll be looking at you, and my chest will get so tight… and it’s like, the only thought in my head is how much I want to reach over and kiss you.” pg. 437 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

“Ruby, give me one reason why we can’t be together, and I’ll give you a hundred why we can. We can go anywhere you want. I’m not your parents. I’m not going to abandon you or send you away, not ever.” pg. 438 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

“I know this is going to sound corny, but…if there’s one good thing that came out of all this, it was that I got to meet you. I would go through it all again-“…”I would, as long as it meant I’d meet you.” pg. 482 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Goodreads Synopsis:

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her-East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

My Review:

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars

What a breathtaking, heart pounding, non-stop action packed novel! There were so many things that happened in the book but you never once were lost with how smoothly and detailed Alexandra Bracken writes. She flowed very well to the present and flashbacks throughout the book (it gives a great backdrop to how these characters came into who they are in this novel, and who they may become as you read the series) there were so many twists and turns in this story that you won’t know what hit you! One moment you think everything is okay, and then, bam! Total chaos!. This story is very reminiscent of The 5th Wave with how the characters struggle to survive and protect one another. There was so much depth to the characters that you really got a sense of who they were, even the ones that try to mask themselves. Ruby is such a strong and caring, especially regarding the group of kids she joined. This book is filled with so many emotions (both good and bad) that you won’t know what to do with yourself afterwards. You feel so much for these characters, anger, sadness, happiness, and every other emotion. If you LOVE dystopian novels, definitely get this book. If you’ve never read a dystopian book, WHAT ARE DOING!?!? Go out and get this book right now!!! I would definitely have Never Fade (The Darkest Minds #2) ready, because you will want to read it right away…BUT, I would suggest to read In Time (The Darkest Minds novella #1.5) because this gives some insight into events that occurred after The Darkest Minds, and leads into Never Fade. This book is filled with action, suspense, survival, and the need to fight for those you care for the most.

Happy Reading!
